Three time periods - young adolescence, mid-teen and young adult - in the life of black-American Chiron is presented. When a child, Chiron lives with his single, crack addict mother Paula in a crime ridden area in Miami. Chiron is a shy, withdrawn child, largely due to his small size and parental neglect. Chiron is bullied and gets insults, both about himself and his mother, that he doesn’t even understand. He has a friend Kevin, but gets guidance from a neighbourhood drug dealer, Juan and his caring girlfriend Teresa. Their home acts as a sanctuary from bullying and his mother’s abuse. Chiron seems to have a predetermined path in life, but is it inevitable?
